let us know! don’t be shy… big or small, just sketch it on a napkin and send us a picture or describe it over the phone! we’re always making new stuff in the studio and can’t help but keep experimenting anyway.

also, don’t forget to check out our online store to peruse our current arsenal of scrap lights.

graypants + plumen.

we love PLUMEN’s beautifully designed energy saving bulbs! they use 80% less energy, last 8 times longer than incandescents, and are gorgeous. what’s not to love??? we think our scrap light cardboard shades and their awesome light bulbs are a match made in heaven…

also, PLUMEN bulbs are now for sale in the graypants online store! purchase them individually or add them to your favorite scrap light!

cardboard scraps are flying and clouds of sawdust fill the air as we prepare for our third year at ICFF (the international contemporary furniture fair) in the megalopolis of new york city. each year we challenge ourselves with finding new ways to transform discarded cardboard boxes into magical creations in our scrap light series! this year we have the best, most efficient solution yet (it’s said the third time’s a charm!) and we think that’s pretty cool. as for the sawdust clouds, stay tuned… we’ve been playing with a new material!

recycling run.

it’s common to see a LOT of cardboard outside the front door of our studio. usually, we’re hauling in a load that we just picked up… from a nearby auto dealership or local business that has boxes to spare, for example. today, we were doing the opposite actually and making a run to the recycling center. while we do have waste leftover from crafting our lamp shades, we’re as efficient as possible and proud of the little amount of cardboard that comes back out of our studio.

currently, about 70-75% of the cardboard that comes in our door ends up in a scrap light shade… not so bad if you ask me, and we’re constantly finding ways to increase our efficiency! i think of it as an interception. we claim a chunk of cardboard being discarded (often being trashed, not even recycled), use most of it, and forward the leftover bits to the recycling center.

so – if you’re curious where your scrap light came from, just ask us! we might actually be able to tell you who to thank… whether it be a nearby office for their old computer boxes or a local dealership for having spare car parts shipped in recently!

thank you.

it’s always a wonderful surprise to get a message from a fellow seattleite asking if they can donate their discarded cardboard boxes to graypants… in this case jonathan lemons from the runberg architecture group in pioneer square. after upgrading their entire office’s lineup of computers, they thought the stockpile of boxes may serve a local purpose in addition to keeping our friends at the recycling center busy.

thank you!!!! graypants couldn’t operate successfully without the thoughtfulness of seattle’s community.

if you see a couple guys randomly cramming a zipcar full of cardboard, it’s probably us. read a few more words about this on facebook.
